Dianne Yudelson attempts to capture the tragic reality of miscarriage. All of these images use ultrasounds and objects which were pre-bought for the child. On the top image where are two hats and two crosses, which emphasise the fact there were twins (two names on the ultrasound). By using objects which would belong to the child once it was born creates a sense of realism that the child was a living thing and would have a life and future if it was born. By having their names on there also does this.
The image is black and white, which conveys the tragic feeling of loss. By having a completely black background your eyes are specifically drawn to the objects. They contrast against the black background, despite being grey because they are bright and do not have much contrast. Due to the ultra sound having a variation of tones between black and white it means your eyes are more drawn to it more than the other objects. Thus, it reinforces the loss of the child and the reality and anguish of it. The objects are placed on the horizontal line on the rule of thirds so that is where your eyes are drawn to. The top two are mostly inside the two vertical lines, but the ultra sound is just across it. The objects at the bottom are placed on an angle, where as the top two images are straight. These two contrasting angles on the objects make the photo more interesting to look at. Try putting your own twist on it so it's not just miscarriages..could you pick some of the other emotions, conditions your other photographers use but in object form.
